Mining EngineeringBS
The Mining Engineering Program develops its graduates to have the skills to safely and efficiently recover the Earth’s resources while protecting the environment. Resources extracted during mining are used in a variety of modern-day products, from toothpaste to cell phones to electric cars. As a mining engineering major at South Dakota Mines, you will be learning at one of only 14 such programs nationwide.
What do mining graduates do?
Today’s Miners use autonomous equipment, robotics and artificial intelligence. They are environmentally conscious and are continually developing and improving mining operations. As the world transitions to a greener economy the demand for materials that help create these energy sources and associated products is increasing. As such, the industry needs talented mining engineers. Are you up for the challenge?
According to Dr. Hall, Department Head, the ideal mining engineering student is, “curious, highly motivated, flexible and dedicated to using their skills for the betterment of society.” It is an exciting time to be in mining engineering. Mining is moving towards more battery electric equipment, sustainable energy sources and the integration of emerging technologies into existing and future operations.

Which clubs, organizations, and activies may be of interest to mining studens?
One way of to enhance your student experience is by participating in clubs and activities that align with your major. The Mining and Mucking Team and Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration align with the Mining Engineering program. There are also leadership and entrepreneurial student organizations as well as other student organizations on campus that will reflect and grow your interests.

$74,273I am expected to graduate in 2027. I chose mines because of the location and atmosphere, I enjoy being by the hills and having easy access to them and the badlands. And my favorite thing about mines is the people I have met and how great everyone is, especially in the MI department.
