Mines Selects Joseph Dlugos as Next Dean of Students
Dr. Joseph Dlugos has been selected as the new dean of students at South Dakota Mines.

Joseph Dlugos, Ph.D., will serve as the new associate vice president of student development and dean of students at South Dakota Mines. Dlugos has worked as a student affairs professional for over a decade and brings an eclectic skill set to Mines. His education and professional experience have covered areas in counseling, student development, crisis management, teaching and non-profit management.

Dlugos comes from Barton College, a private liberal arts institution in eastern North Carolina. At Barton, he served most recently as the dean of student life after several years in an associate dean position and four years as director of housing and residence life. In his time there, he was the chief student affairs officer, advised the Student Government Association, and oversaw residence life, student health services, spiritual life, culinary services, student conduct, and the campus police. Dlugos also has worked as an adjunct instructor in both the psychology and first year seminar departments for several years.

Dlugos earned bachelor's degrees in English and theatre from Southern Connecticut State University, a Master of Science in counseling and student affairs from Minnesota State University Moorhead, and a Doctor of Philosophy in counseling and counselor education from North Carolina State University. His dissertation topic was Perceptions of Face Validity when Utilizing Projective and Objective Personality Assessments: The Impact of Generational Cohort and Gender Identity.

In his spare time, he enjoys camping, hiking, European genealogy and gardening. Dlugos, his wife Lacey, and their son, Grayson, will be relocating to the Rapid City area in June.

Dlugos takes the place of Dr. Patricia Mahon, who is retiring after 21 years of service as vice president for student development and dean of students at South Dakota Mines.
