RAPID CITY, SD (Nov. 6, 2020) — Military Times, College Factual and Military Friendly rank programs at South Dakota Mines among the best in the country for veterans.
The organization Military Friendly ranks South Dakota Mines' graduate programs fifth in the United States for veterans. The 2021 College Factual rankings put Mines' engineering programs among the top 1% in the nation for veterans among universities of its type. The 2020 Military Times best list ranks Mines 38th out of 134 colleges surveyed. These organizations recognize South Dakota Mines' commitment to providing quality educational opportunities to America's veterans and military-connected students.
“I am continually amazed at the dedication of our veteran students. Of all the resources we can offer, the greatest are the veteran students themselves. At any given time, you can walk in the Veterans Resource Center and see them helping and supporting each other. It's a true testament to their sense of teamwork and comradery,” says Derek Flom, manager of the Veterans Resource Center at Mines and an Air Force veteran.
Consistently ranked as a military friendly institution, Mines currently enrolls 160 veteran or active duty students. The university offers a comprehensive Veterans Resource Center where students can study and receive tutoring and scholarship assistance, as well as help with resumes, cover letters and academic and life skills.
The organization College Factual takes a more in-depth look at separate degree programs that are best for veterans. Mines achieved top scores in civil engineering, which is ranked in the top 5% nationwide. Its mechanical engineering program ranks in the top 15%.
South Dakota Mines will honor veterans and active duty students and staff on Veterans Day with a digital event. Photographs and messages from current veteran students and university leadership will be displayed on digital billboards across campus.
The South Dakota Mines Veteran's Club held its annual Chili Cook-Off at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, at the American Legion Post 22.
