Mines Donates 4632 Hours of Community Service During the 2021-2022 School Year
South Dakota Mines faculty, staff, and students joined with members of the university's Center for Alumni Relations and Advancement in 4,632 hours in community service during the 2021-2022 school year. Members of the campus community spent this time volunteering at local charities, churches, organizations, and non-profit boards.
“Mines has a long history of giving back and we are proud to continue the tradition of community service and volunteerism tied to our campus culture,” says Mines President Jim Rankin.
Mines scholar athletes and coaching staff donated more than half of all the community service last year with a total of 2,519 hours. Mines faculty and staff also gave back by serving on the boards of various organizations that include the United Way, the South Dakota Science and Technology Authority, the Rapid City Airport Board, Youth in Science Rapid City, and many more.
Mines students are encouraged to give back to the community throughout the year by participating in research and engineering projects that build the community and assist local organizations, charities, and non-profits. Student organizations, fraternities, and sororities also undertake volunteer work throughout the year, ranging from canned food drives to fundraisers for local charities. In January, Mines held its 10th annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service. Students fanned out across Rapid City and collected 2,803 pounds of food for Feeding South Dakota.
