Dash is Back: South Dakota Mines Chemical Engineering Students Host Community Dublin Dash
The race will start at the Memorial Park bandshell and head east to Roosevelt Park and back. The registration fee for adult participation is $25 or $20 for children 10 and under or with a Mines student ID. All participants can register here.

After a year hiatus, the South Dakota Mines student chapter of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) is bringing back the popular Dublin Dash. The 5K fun run/walk, in its 18th year, is Saturday, March 22. Check-in begins at 9:30 a.m. with the race starting at 10.

The race will start at the Memorial Park bandshell and head east to Roosevelt Park and back. The Dublin Dash, in its 18th year, is a fundraising for Mines AIChE and supports travel expenses and other conference-related expenses. “It helps fund our ability to attend conferences and present our research,” said Emily Randolph, junior chemical engineering major and AIChE president.

The AIChE skipped the 2024 race because the chapter was busy hosting the regional conference around the same time.

Patrick Gilcrease, professor in the Karen M. Swindler Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, started the Dublin Dash in the early 2000s. As the new advisor for AIChE, he was looking for new fundraising opportunities. At the same time, the Black Hills Runners Club wanted a local St. Patrick’s Day race. Gilcrease, also a member of the Runners Club, volunteered AIChE to host the race. “It was a win-win relationship – the running community got a new race with ready volunteers, and AIChE got a nice fundraising event.”

The race has been a community staple since.

The registration fee for adult participation is $25 or $20 for children 10 and under or with a Mines student ID. All participants can register here.

Participants are encouraged to wear St. Patrick’s Day attire.
