Undergraduate Student

Congratulations on your acceptance to South Dakota Mines. This begins a whole new phase in your life — pretty soon you'll be getting ready for college! We hope to make this transition as easy as possible for you by providing the information and preparation you need.

Be sure you use the New Student Checklist as you prepare to be a student at South Dakota Mines.

New Student Checklist

When you're getting ready for college, there's a lot to think about and a lot to do.  New students should follow our New Student Checklist (below), to stay on track and make sure nothing essential gets missed.

Housing and Meal Plans

HOUSING:  Visit the Residence Life website for the information you'll need on South Dakota Mines Residence Halls — Connolly Hall, Palmerton Hall, Peterson Hall, Placer Hall, Rocker Square I, and Rocker Square II — plus information on off-campus housing too.

MEALS: The Dining Services website has information about dining on campus, including meal plans and costs.

ACCUPLACER Testing

The ACCUPLACER test is a national test used by many universities, technical schools and community colleges. The ACT test is the required initial test used to place students who attend a South Dakota regental university into their mathematics and English courses: A student can be placed in classes via the ACT sub-scores for math and English, or, for more accurate placement, using the ACCUPLACER test. Students who need to take the ACCUPLACER test should register to take the test on the South Dakota Mines campus or schedule an appointment to take it closer to home.

Immunizations

In 2007, the South Dakota Legislature passed a bill requiring students enrolled in post-secondary institutions to furnish evidence of immunity to selected diseases. Every student (graduate and undergraduate) admitted to a post-secondary institution - public or private - in the state of South Dakota, who meets established criteria, must demonstrate immunity to measles, mumps, and rubella.

Orientation/Welcome Week

All new students will need to attend an Orientation prior to the start of the semester to help prepare them for the challenges they may face their first year of college. There are orientation sessions for parents as well and we encourage parents to attend if they can. In addition, a variety of fun Welcome Week activities help students get acquainted with the campus and with other new students.
