FAQ
Use the PhD Reduction form when the student has completed an MS degree from an external institution, and the MS is relevant to the PhD. The student will receive a 24-course credit reduction and, if the MS was a thesis MS, 6 credit dissertation reduction. Courses and grades will not appear on the transcript or be counted in the GPA. You will need to list any MS courses that will fulfill required South Dakota Mines courses, but courses counting as electives need not be listed on the form.
Use the Transfer Credits form when the student has graduate credits but no completed MS, or the MS is not fully relevant to the PhD. All courses must be listed and equated to a South Dakota Mines course, and the courses and grades will appear on the transcript and affect the student GPA.
