Brief Bio

 Ms. Karnes is an instructor in the Department of Geology and Geological Engineering. Her primary role at South Dakota Mines is teaching the core classes in the Geospatial Technology minor, as well as running GIS software distribution and management for the university. Ms. Karnes received her bachelor’s degree in Geology at South Dakota Mines in 2019 and worked in the private sector as a Geospatial Analyst for Advanced Remote Sensing Incorporated before receiving her master’s degree in Space and Planetary Science from the University of Arkansas. She is currently working on her PhD in Data Science and Engineering at South Dakota Mines.

Teaching

Courses taught by Ms. Karnes are in the areas of Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing. Since joining Mines, she has taught courses in GIS (GEOL 416/516/L), Geospatial Databases (GEOL 418/518), Advanced Geospatial Analysis (GEOL 419/519), Remote Sensing (GEOL 420/520), and Surveying for Mining and Mineral Engineers (GEOE/MEM 201L).
