Brief Bio

Dr. Maribeth Price is the Dean of Graduate Education at South Dakota Mines. She joined the faculty of the Department of Geology and Geological Engineering in 1995, served as Department Chair from 2006 to 2011, and became the graduate dean in 2017. She worked for the United States Geological Survey from 1985 to 1987 and from 1990 to 1992. She is the author of several books on Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and has taught professional GIS workshops to over 1300 participants since 2001. She is a certified Quality Matters Peer Reviewer and reviews online courses at South Dakota Mines. She is the Curator of Maps at the James E. Martin Paleontological Research Center and Museum of Geology.

Research Expertise

Dr. Price has specialized in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), spatial analysis, and remote sensing. She completed her dissertation on the geology and tectonics of Venus based on radar remote sensing of NASA’s Magellan Mission. She has collaborated and published in diverse fields including planetary geology, hydrogeology, forestry, wildlife management, lightning analysis, livestock management, carbon sequestration, and environmental resources.

Teaching

Dr. Price developed and taught the GIS curriculum from 1995 to 2016 including GEOL 416/516 Intro to GIS, GEOL 417/517 Geospatial Databases, and GEOL 419/519 Geospatial Analysis. She created the Certificate and the Minor in Geospatial Technology. She has also taught GEOL 420/520 Intro to Remote Sensing, GEOL 321 Search for Our Past, and GEOL 464/465 Senior Research. Since 2019 she has presented faculty development workshops about teaching and online instruction.
