Research Expertise
Carter J. Kerk, PhD, PE, CSP, CPE research interests and experiences are in the areas
of ergonomics/human factors engineering, safety engineering, occupational biomechanics,
and American Indian STEM initiatives.
Brief Bio
Carter J. Kerk, PhD, PE, CSP, CPE is a Professor in the Industrial Engineering Department
at South Dakota School of Mines. He is a licensed Professional Engineer (Michigan
and South Dakota), a Certified Safety Professional, and a Certified Professional Ergonomist.
Prior to joining SD Mines, Dr. Kerk was an assistant professor in the Industrial Engineering
Department and Safety Engineering Program at Texas A&M University. His industry engineering
experience was at Central Nebraska Tubing (tubular steel manufacturing), Brownie Manufacturing
(metal fabrication and finishing), Dorsey Laboratories (pharmaceutical manufacturing),
and the Nebraska Energy Office. Over the course of his career, Dr. Kerk has published
34 peer-reviewed publications in journals, books, and conference proceedings and has
delivered over 160 invited seminars and lectures in the US, Mexico, Canada, and Spain.
He has been awarded over $4.6M in sponsored research.
Teaching
Carter J. Kerk, PhD, PE, CSP, CPE teaches in the areas of ergonomics/human factors
engineering, work methods and measurement, safety engineering, industrial hygiene,
and engineering economics. Recent course offerings include IENG 241L (Teaming & Quality
Methods), IENG 302 (Engineering Economics), IENG 331 (Safety Engineering), IENG 431/531
(Industrial Hygiene), and ENGM 661 (Engineering Economics for Managers).
