Breif Bio
Dr. Carlson is an assistant professor in the Department of Materials and Metallurgical Engineering, which he joined in 2021. After getting his PhD from the Colorado School of Mines, he worked in industry for a time before accepting a position as a Technology Transfer Fellow at Swansea University in the UK. There he worked in support of the UK steel industry before returning to South Dakota Mines.
Research Expertise
Dr. Carlson’s research focuses on the recovery of critical materials from recycled feedstocks and non-traditional sources. Areas of interest include recycling of lithium-ion batteries, processing of inland manganese sea nodules, and solar panel recycling.
Teaching
Course taught by Dr. Carlson, are in the areas of chemical processing and extractive metallurgy. These include Aqueous Extraction, Refining, and Recycling (MET 310), High-Temperature Extraction, Refining, and Recycling (MET 321), Transport Phenomena (MET 422), Heterogeneous Kinetics (MES 728), and Critical Materials (GEOL/MES 692).
