Brief Bio
After receiving a BS degree in Civil Engineering from Purdue University, I served
in the US Army as a Platoon Leader and Company Commander after attending Airborne
& Ranger schools. Upon honorable discharge, I joined the Climax Molybdenum Co. (AMAX)
working at the Climax Mine in Colorado. I started as a miner underground on the 600
Level, progressing up the ranks of operations & management as Level Engineer, Shift
Boss & Production Foreman. I assumed the VP & General Mgr. position of the Alma American
Mining & Milling companies, private entities owned by the Coors family of brewing
fame in Colorado. Working full time, I attended the Colorado School of Mines earning
an MS Degree in Mineral Economics. Relevant experience includes operations & management
in; UG gold, sulfide flotation processing, surface exploration & production of oxide
gold deposits, cyanide heap leach operations, UG mining for mineral specimens, consulting
in mining project evaluation & economic analyses, and the Board of Directors of a
public gold mining company.
Teaching
My mining engineering, engineering management and mining operations management experience
brings hands-on practical knowledge to the class room. I am an advocate of preparing
and mentoring new mining engineers for their first job in the real world. With over
40 years of experience in engineering, operations, management, production and consulting;
in surface and underground mining, flotation mineral processing, cyanide heap leach
projects, as well as a position on the Board of Directors of a publicly traded gold
mining company, I try to impart my experience and practical knowledge to my students.
Preparation for an engineering career should be a combination of academics and application
of life experience in industry. "Good judgement comes from experience, and experience?
- well, that comes from poor judgement."
