International Community at South Dakota Mines
South Dakota Mines (SDM) has a strong, inter-connected international community of
students, faculty, resources and support. We all work together to help international
students thrive and succeed as well as help students that want an education abroad
experience.
International students have historically constituted approximately 5 percent of the total student population. The number of international students is approximately 110 from more than 35 countries, enrolled in both undergraduate and graduate studies. The faculty includes many people with international backgrounds as well.
The Ivanhoe International Center (IIC) was established at South Dakota Mines in the fall semester, 1994. The IIC was made possible through a generous gift by an alumnus, Mr. Lytton F. "Buster" Ivanhoe. The IIC is located in the Surbeck Student Center, and is the center of international activities on campus. A broad program of services is provided to international students and students wanting to study abroad. The IIC has an open door policy for all students.

International Education Week
International Education Week (IEW) is an opportunity to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide. This joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education is part of our efforts to promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn, and exchange experiences. We have some interesting events during this week leading up to Diwali!
Diwali - Festival of Lights
Every year in November the India Club at South Dakota Mines puts on a special celebration for Diwali, the Festival of Lights. Diwali is one of the biggest festivals in India for those of the Hindu faith. Here, the campus community, as well as many in Rapid City, come to the Diwali celebration for the music, food, dancing, exotic costumes and fireworks. Please see the campus calendar for actual dates and more information on the event.
Diwali 2024 begins at 5 pm
Cultural Expo
International students from South Dakota Mines and a variety of community groups celebrate their cultural diversity with food, entertainment and displays.
