International Community at South Dakota Mines

South Dakota Mines (SDM) has a strong, inter-connected international community of students, faculty, resources and support. We all work together to help international students thrive and succeed here as well as help students that want an education abroad experience.

International students have historically constituted approximately 5 to 10 percent of the total student population. The number of international students is approximately 110 from more than 35 countries, enrolled in both undergraduate and graduate studies. The faculty includes many people with international backgrounds as well.

The Ivanhoe International Center (IIC) was established at South Dakota Mines in the fall semester, 1994. The IIC was made possible through a generous gift by an alumnus, Mr. Lytton F. "Buster" Ivanhoe. The IIC is located in the Surbeck Student Center, and is the center of international activities on campus. A broad program of services is provided to international students and students wanting to study abroad. The IIC has an open door policy for all students.
