SD Mines Summer Camp National Summer Transportation Institue

The Summer Camp that takes you places!

Students will explore engineering careers in transportation during this week-long residential camp sponsored by the Federal Highway Administration and administered by the South Dakota Department of Transportation.

The National Summer Transportation Institute (NSTI) emphasizes how math is used to design transportation systems for land, air, and water. Students will get a behind-the-scenes look at how transportation systems work, along with classroom instruction and hands-on activities in our labs.

With one-on-one attention from faculty and staff, students will come away understanding the career opportunities in the transportation sector and will be encouraged to pursue college degrees that prepare them for transportation-related degree programs, such as Civil and Environmental Engineering and Industrial Engineering.

During this one-week overnight camp, campers will:

  • Tour of Dakota Water Science Center of US Geological Survey to understand water inland navigation.
  • Tour of Pennington County Highway Division to learn about extreme winter weather protocols.
  • Tour of Rapid City Regional Airport to understand airport operations and ground handling.
  • Leadership Development through recreational activities emphasizing team building, leadership, and communication.
  • Experience campus living, learn about fun things college students do, the kinds of jobs they get when they graduate, and much more.
  • Gain an understanding of the college admissions process and how to prepare.
