First Year Peer Mentors
First year peer mentors leverage their own experiences to help first year students persevere through academic challenges, take ownership of their higher education experience, discover their potential and create a support system. The program pairs first-year, degree-seeking students with upper-class students in the same discipline. All first-year students are automatically placed in the program; mentors are selected through a self-nomination and application process, with input from departments.
First year peer mentors assist the Office of Student Success in fulfilling their mission of providing all students with the resources and support they need to meet their academic potential. To that end, first year peer mentors lead weekly learning labs in small communities of discipline specific cohorts. These intentional communities are the basis of social, personal and academic success. By working through challenging coursework, engaging in social activities, celebrating success and carrying learning beyond the classroom, they provide a sense of belonging and generate a culture of high achievement.
