Explore the Dynamic World of Industrial Engineering at South Dakota Mines

From integrating high standards of safety at a steel plant to maximizing the processes of production of edible food products to devising efficient processes for locomotive maintenance at a rail yard, the industrial engineering field is one of the most wide ranging engineering programs.
Industrial Engineers devise efficient systems and processes that integrate machines, materials, workers and information.
Safety is always a high priority when manufacturing a product or providing a service.

At South Dakota Mines, the Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management (IEEM) program is housed within the Department of Industrial Engineering. Graduates of the program employ a set of skills that include mathematical modeling, probability and statistics, human factors, safety engineering, interpersonal skills, project management, and the ability to manage and administer large technical engineering and research projects. Thus, industrial engineering may be thought of as applied problem solving, from inception to implementation.

An Industrial Engineering student at South Dakota Mines receives hands-on experience with 3D printing, CNC machining, laser engraving,  computer simulations, facilities planning, and optimization.  The program also has the most electives available compared to other engineering majors on campus, which allows students the ability to take other engineering classes outside the department (computer science, healthcare, business, etc.) geared toward their specific interests.  The department prepares students for success from freshmen year encouraging attending school career fairs with resume review help.  This provides numerous opportunities for paid co-ops or internships with such companies as Cargill, Michelin, L3 Technologies, Hormel, Collins Aerospace, and Union Pacific to name a few.

The Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET.

Lin Guo - Assistant Professor

Lin Guo - Assistant Professor

Lin Guo’s research centers on machine learning-based optimization, advanced manufacturing, and cyber-physical systems, focusing on enhancing algorithms and optimization techniques to improve system robustness. Her work spans manufacturing, quality control, supply chain management, healthcare queuing, network design, decision support systems, and product end-of-life management. With over 20 publications, she co-authored the monograph: Architecting Satisficing Strategies for Designing Complex Systems.
Suhao Chen - Assistant Professor

Suhao Chen - Assistant Professor

Dr. Chen's research is primarily about data science and engineering. Areas of focus include predictive analytics through temporal modeling of longitudinal data, manipulating real-world electronic health records, unsupervised learning such as clustering, and extracting information from texts using natural language processing models. Dr. Chen also has expertise in optimization and supply chain analysis.

Department Organizations

Virtually all majors on campus are associated with a student chapter of a professional organization, and we encourage students to participate. For industrial engineering and engineering management, students should consider joining:

The Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers' primary purpose is to foster both a professional and social atmosphere within the profession. The Hardrock Chapter of IISE is involved with laser engraving, FE Exam prep, nationwide competitions, attending regional and national conferences, and more.  Students interested in joining IISE should contact the chapter president, Dr. Piper (the faculty adviser), or checkout the Facebook page for more information.

A list of student activities and campus organizations may be found on Rocker Central.
